Fiber vs Ethernet — What's the Difference?
Fibre optic and copper ethernet are both used in modern networks, but they serve different purposes and choosing wrong is costly. This guide from Express IT Solutions explains how each works, when fibre is worth it, and when Cat6 ethernet is more than enough — so you can plan the right cabling for your office, hotel or data centre in Goa.

How Fibre Optic Works
- Transmits data as light pulses through a glass or plastic core
- Completely immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI)
- Supports very high speeds over long distances
- Single-mode fibre suits long distances; multi-mode suits shorter, high-bandwidth runs
- Harder to tap, so more secure than copper
How Ethernet (Copper) Works
- Carries electrical signals over twisted copper pairs
- Standards: Cat5e (1G), Cat6 (1G / 10G short runs), Cat6A (10G)
- Reliable up to 100m per cable run
- Cheaper and simpler to terminate than fibre
- Can be affected by EMI in industrial environments
How Our Process Works
- Assessment: Review the site, existing environment, users, requirements and the problem to be solved before selecting equipment or changing configuration.
- Solution Design: Choose the scope, equipment, configuration and implementation approach around compatibility, capacity, security and budget.
- Installation / Configuration: Carry out the agreed work methodically while protecting the existing environment and business continuity where relevant.
- Testing & Validation: Test the system against the intended use case rather than assuming that installation alone means the solution is complete.
- Documentation & Handover: Provide the key configuration, ownership and maintenance information needed for support, future changes and responsible administration.
When to Use Fibre vs Ethernet
- Fibre: runs longer than 100m, e.g. between buildings
- Fibre: high-interference sites like factories and hospitals
- Fibre: high-speed backbone between switches and for future-proofing
- Ethernet (Cat6): standard runs under 100m inside a building
- Ethernet (Cat6): most office, retail and hospitality deployments
